This is a story of a man giving his time and labor for free in order to help others. This is a story of charity and consideration of another. This is the story of Rodney Smith Jr. and his charity, Raising Men.
Rodney doesn’t love to do yard work, but what he hates more is watching the elderly, the disabled and the single mothers mow their own yard. After he had already mowed 125 lawns on his own, he decided that wasn’t enough. That’s when he decided to create Raising Men Lawn Care Service.
“This has been my vision since I started with the first yard. All the lawns we do are done for FREE,” Rodney says when talking with the patrons of his service.
According to Rodney, Raising Men is “the union of an ordinary yard maintenance service and the commitment to establish an inspiring program to keep our young men and boys (young women and girls) on a positive path while learning and understanding their value in society.”
Rodney gained national attention after he posted on his Facebook page about helping a 93-year-old woman who had been struggling to maintain her own yard. The woman’s neighbors had heard about Raising Men Lawn Care and had given Rodney a call. His post features a picture of the woman along with Rodney and his helper, Terrence Stroy. He claimed to be back every 2 weeks to mow her lawn for her, for free!
“We did this sweet lady’s lawn today. She is 93, the neighbors told us that she been out their (sic) trying to cut her own lawn,” Smith posted. “Have no fear, raising men lawn care is going to make sure her lawn is done every two weeks! Making a difference in our community!”
The story doesn’t end here. After this post went viral and journalists across the nation retold the story of the 93-year-old who didn’t have to mow her own yard, Raising Men blossomed into something great. People began to call wanting to donate money and young men began to volunteer their own time. The youngest team member is only seven years old and is quickly approaching his 100th yard.
“When I first started cutting 100 lawns by my self for FREE for the elderly , disabled and single parent mothers, I never would have thought it would grow into this much support from around the world,” Rodney wrote in another Facebook post.
While this story lacks and end, it does not lack anything in it’s moralistic value. This is a story about one man striving to do something for his community. This is a story about one man teaching young boys how to be men. This is a story about Raising Men.
