A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with blasphemy after allegedly posting derogatory and offensive images aimed at Muslims on his Facebook page. A Muslim man alerted the police and told them that the boy’s post was insulting and sacrilegious. Locals claim that the post showed an image of Islam’s most sacred mosque in Mecca with a pig’s head on top.
Shahbaz Ahmed, a police official, said the informant contacted officers over a post “hurting religious sentiments of Muslims and desecrating the religious place.” He said the boy “had done a great injustice to us by badly hurting our religious feelings.” Police did not release the details of the post, other than confirming that it included a picture of the Kaaba. It is not clear whether the boy posted the image, was tagged in it or liked the post. The post has since been deleted.
Under Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws, the boy is currently facing either life in prison or the death penalty. The boy’s family has been forced to flee their home in Bhai Pheru for fear of violence against them while their son awaits trial in prison. Pakistan is the sixth most dangerous place in the world for Christians to live, as they often are facing asinine allegations of blasphemy, which has a very high price to pay. Protests in Pakistan have taken place speaking out against the strict blasphemy laws and the horrible ways that they have been effecting Christians. Religious offenses include “wounding religious feelings,” “derogatory remarks” and “defiling the Koran.”
Wilson Chowdhry, chairman of the British Pakistani Christian Association, said: “This incident again underlines the worthlessness of Christians in Pakistan. A 16-year-old boy who has been accused of a blasphemy, has been placed in a prison without any proper investigation. This should terrify anyone. These heartless monsters are trying whatever means they can of infiltrating our Western society, and it is only a matter of time before this becomes the norm here in our country.
