As a horrific wreck was unfolding on I-85 in Commerce Georgia, an equally amazing thing was taking place. Kay Denton was traveling as she came upon the carnage of twisted metal and busted glass. As she peered out of her window something caught eye and she decided to snap a quick photo.
What she saw when she reviewed her picture set her speechless and awed. As Denton and many others sat by and watched as crews tried to clear the scene and save those in the car it was discovered that an 8-year old boy was trapped under the twisted wreckage. An Officer appeared to be laying on the ground to assist the boy, not unusual in itself, but what he was actually doing took Dentons breath away.
The interaction and the young boy was incredible. Denton stated, “This child was an 8-year old black male who was scared to death and had some internal injuries. This Officer laid on the ground with this child, cradling his head in his hand and talked to him to keep him calm.”
Then Denton found out another detail that shocked not only her but the Officer as well. It was the boys birthday. So, right there in the middle of the interstate, with rescue crews and chaos all around them, the Officer began to sing “Happy Birthday.” Denton wrote later that, “At one point the child reached over and patted the officer on the head and then played with his hair.”
Denton wrote her post about this specific wreck with an intention in mind, she is also a Commerce Police Officer. Her post continued, “THIS is why I’m a police officer, to help people, to be there for them no matter what the circumstances and no matter what skin color! With all the ‘anti-police’ propaganda that is seen in the media, all of the ‘bad cop’ stories, and stories of ‘racial’ issues, i wanted to share THIS!”
Neither the young boys name nor the Officers has been revealed as of yet, but this is one that should be told. In a world of madness and hate, Heroes still exist.
