Brazil- While rehearsals for the opening ceremony of the Olympics were underway, witnesses noticed a suspicious tool box nearby. The random placement of the box prompted a swift investigation. Authorities sent in a robot to investigate the small toolbox on Sunday at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
When the robot touched the toolbox, it exploded. There are no reports of any injuries. However, law enforcement officials are confused as to how and why a tool box with explosives was able to be placed within the property with all their extensive security nearby. There have been quite a few scary moments for the athletes and competitors who have already faced thievery and other criminal matters that should not be taking place so close to the Olympic events.
A fire ignited in the basement of the Australian athletes village on Friday causing athletes and officials to evacuate. Thieves then gained access during the evacuation and stole two laptops and team shirts from vacant rooms. Australian Olympic Committee spokesman, Mike Tancred stated, “We did lose some shirts and a couple of laptops, one on the fifth floor from a cycling official and one in the office downstairs.” Australian chef de mission Kitty Chiller claimed that she, “…saw three fire (officers)… I don’t know which one they were from… walking out with team shirts. There is no CCTV in the village. At the time I did not know (who they were). They were not team members. I did not know then whether they were volunteers who were given shirts because they helped to evacuate us.”
It would seem the “extensive security” is incredibly lacking. Someone was able to walk into the stadium and plant a tool box with explosives without being seen. With fire workers walking out with items that belonged to the athletes, it makes one wonder actually how safe these people are? The world has changed so much, not even the Olympics are the same anymore.
