A McDonald’s employee was recently fired and is now facing criminal charges after it was discovered that the employee put mustard in a police officer’s soft drink. An incident that also happened a few weeks before, but was never properly addressed by the franchise’s management.
According to 13WIBW, a Topeka police officer went to the McDonald’s located at 2001 N. Topeka Boulevard the day after Thanksgiving. The officer reportedly went through the drive-thru of the restaurant for his order. After receiving his order, the officer said his drink tasted funny. After removing the lid, he discovered that mustard had been squirted inside his soft drink.
The company that owns the franchise for the North Topeka McDonald’s restaurant said the responsible employee who put the mustard in a drink bought by a law enforcement officer in the drive-thru no longer works for the company.
“All customers, including local law enforcement officers who protect and serve our communities, are always welcome at our restaurants,” said Tom and Marilyn Dobski, McDonald’s franchisees, adding that they were “shocked” by their employee’s behavior. “We proudly support police officers and all divisions of first responders at our restaurants across northeast Kansas.”
On Sunday, a Facebook page that supports officers in Kansas named “Kansas GOING BLUE” posted a picture of the officer’s tainted drink along with an officer safety alert.
As of 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, the post had received reactions from more than 2,000 Facebook users, been shared 4,241 times and been the subject of 942 comments. One of the people commenting noted that some people have severe allergic reactions to mustard and that this prank could’ve turned into a serious injury.
Late Monday afternoon, Topeka police Lt. Colleen Stuart said in a news release that, after consultation with the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office, the incident had prompted a criminal investigation.
