One of his fellow athletes who is not impressed with his antics is the legendary basketball superstar, Shaquille O'neal.

Colin Kaepernick made headlines this past week when he decided to use his oppressed position of power to protest unfair treatment towards minorities by sitting while the national anthem was being played. Kaepernick gained the countries attention, some for better and some for much worse. One of his fellow athletes who is not impressed with his antics is the legendary basketball superstar, Shaquille O’neal.

49ers-chargers-football-4be5c89d22cb95dcO’neal has never been afraid to speak out, but on Wednesday, in an interview with Fox and Friends he condemned the actions of the football player, saying “I don’t know Colin, but again, to each his own. I don’t really have a say on it, but I would never do that. My father was a military man, and you know, he protected this country. Uncles are in law enforcement, you know, they go out and work hard every day. Just, there are other ways to get your point across.”

Maybe Kaepernick needs to listen to the wisdom of his elders. Do you agree with Shaq? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments!

As a combat veteran, I know we have freedom of speech and should be able to speak our minds, however it is extremely distasteful to disrespect the very symbol of your freedom. Our Nation’s flag stands for the very freedoms he and all of us enjoy, therefore to me, when you disrespect our Nation’s flag and National Anthem, you are symbolizing your dislike for our Country and all it has given you. One should not seek to cut off the very arm which paid such a high price for you to enjoy your FREEDOM.

Here’s the thing it’s not about disrespecting the country. It’s about showing disrespect for the racist attitudes that have been allow to fester and grow in this country

Then this was not the forum. He disrespected the country in his actions. He should choose a better platform and action to get his point across.

“Choose” is what is front and center in this debate and he “chose” to do so under the auspices of his rights. What we think or whether we agree or disagree is our “choice.” This is what the framers of the constitution designed and what was at the heart of the revolutionary war – the ability to stand, alone, in the recesses of one’s own destiny without threat of repercussions from a despot. Whether in speech, press, religion, etc., we have the “freedom” to express that inalienable right. The words (constitution) give the symbol (flag) credence. My father, brothers and… Read more »

The real issues are the validity of his protest. And it is a very valid protest. Has he broken any laws in his protest? The truth is, if he had he would have been expeditiously punished. So he has very efficiently raised a national issue without causing harm. That retired big dude, he just be “Shaqtin the fool” and being fashionable with his opinions. S_

Jon Carlos and Tommy Smith chose the biggest stage to make their political statement, and at that time it was not completely clear what they meant by it to everyone. The subject is hot, and maybe one reason is because not everyone is impacted the same way in their personal life? There are always at least two ways to work for change: quietly behind the scenes doing things to help your people, and boldly in everyone’s face seeking to bring public attention to the mistreatment of others. Both approaches are valid. A free country affords individuals the choice is what… Read more »
